"Culoe De Song – Bio/Elevation"

Culoe De Song is constantly rising higher – a fact that’s sealed by his second album, which is aptly-titled ‘Elevation’. It’s a record that takes the producer’s trademark, trance-inducing deep house into what he describes as “a new and evolutionary stage.”

A jump forward from his debut, ‘A Giant Leap’, this sophomore effort has Culoe’s typically stripped yet soulful beats bolstered by some radical vocalists, including Liquideep’s Ziyon, Patrick Chappell, Shota from Black Coffee’s Shana outfit, Ternielle Nelson and acclaimed US singer Kenny Bobien.

Culoe has also collaborated with France’s most devastating deep house practitioner, Rocco, and he concludes nearly 80 minutes of thrills with the inclusion of a couple of terrific remixes he’s turned out for South African acts Goldfish and funk-dub four-piece 340ml.

‘Elevation’ is an album that marks the latest peak in the career of an artist who has established himself as a major house music force, both in South Africa and abroad. Culoe confirms: “It’s about taking a step higher,” then adds, “I’ve finished up with the fundamentals – now it’s about upping the sound.”

Culoe De Song has been on an ascending trajectory since he started DJing in Durban in the mid-2000s. His one-of-a-kind, crowd-controlling instincts were pretty evident from the get-go and locally he’s ended up spinning alongside the likes of DJs At Work (Christos and Vinny Da Vinci) and Black Coffee, as well as international visitors like Little Louie Vega, Rocco and Manoo.

Following his forays into clubland, Culoe began exploring production – with favourable and almost instant results. In 2007 he collaborated on the track “100 Zulu Warriors” with the then-burgeoning Black Coffee, who included the tune’s tribal aural assault on his second album, ‘Have Another One’. Fundamentally important, the track signified a further step up the ladder for Culoe; one that’s lead to multiple releases on manifold local and international labels.

The first was Black Coffee’s Soulistic Music, with tunes like “Dwellers of the Jungle”, “Inspiration” and “100 Zulu Warriors (Remix)” making it onto a number of compilations and marking Culoe out as a special talent – one bright enough to represent South Africa at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, Spain, in 2009.

Just the first of many international showings – and coinciding with the release of his richly dramatic debut album, ‘A Giant Leap’ – the Red Bull gig at the massive Sonar Festival afforded Culoe the opportunity to network with deep house’s wide world, which resulted in him being asked to mix a much sought-after podcast for revolutionary electronic dance music website Resident Advisor.

‘ A Giant Leap ‘ also made Culoe De Song an official award nominee in his home country & internationally. In various categories, the album got nominations for the 2010 South African Music Awards, followed by the Namibian Museke Awards & the 2010 Metro FM Awards.

The Sonar jaunt also brought him into the orbit of Dixon, who manages Germany’s esteemed Innervisions label alongside Ame and Henrik Schwarz. The stable issued Culoe’s “The Bright Forest” (backed with “Super Afro” and “African Subway”) to critical acclaim across the globe in 2009, and a year later cherry-picked “Webaba” (featuring the late Busi Mhlongo on vocal duties) from his debut album for a follow-up EP. Culoe is even big in Japan, where the Mule Musiq label has also unleashed a brace of singles centered around his swirling Afrocentric rhythms and subtle, digital textures.

Culoe’s music has been described as “epic African house with a strange touch,” while he sums it up as “a dramatic vibration of ‘the drum’.” Culoe’s chords sky-write while his rhythms writhe, and more than any other SA house artiste he’s managed to successfully segue international and local sounds – craftily mixing the best beats from both worlds.

'Elevation’ he says confidently, is “a vintage album; one that will last a long time.” There can be little doubt he’s right.
